Number of Fukushima Evacuees Falls Below 90,000 - JAPAN ATOMIC INDUSTRIAL FORUM, INC.

On July 4, Fukushima Prefecture announced that the number of evacuees both within and outside the prefecture following the Great East Japan Earthquake and the accident at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plants had fallen below 90,000 – i.e., 89,323 as of that day.

Broken down, there are 47,928 evacuees in the prefecture, 41,375 outside the prefecture, and 20 whose current addresses are unknown. The highest confirmed number of evacuees had been 164,865 in May 2012.

The prefecture attributed the reduced number in part to the lifting of evacuation orders in some municipalities that had been issued in regard to the nuclear accident, and the closing of temporary housing in evacuation destination areas as post-disaster public housing has become available for occupancy.
