To reduce the risk from keeping contaminated water accumulated in tanks, Toshiba’s second mobile strontium-removal system began treatment, starting with two of the four units. That work is being carried out together with the multi-nuclide removal equipment known as the Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS).
On February 24, meanwhile, it was reported that highly radioactive water was accumulating on the roof of the Unit 2 reactor building at Fukushima Daiichi. By the end of this month, the Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TEPCO) will place zeolite sandbags around the roof drains and remove possible contamination sources, including roof blocks and paving sand. Zeolite and absorptive materials will also be placed at drain “K,” which has a higher radiation level than the others.
