3 February, 2025

A non-destructive analysis of fuel debris from Unit 2 at decommissioned Fukushima Daiichi was released on January 30. The work was done in anticipation of specific discussions in the future on the full-scale removal of fuel debris, as previously reported by AIJ on November 20, 2024.
On February 4, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) announced that it had uncovered the role of previously unknown microorganisms using its two underground research facilities: the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory, which targets granite bedrock, and the Horonobe Underground Research Center, which focuses on sedimentary rock formations.
