On November 11, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, Ltd. announced that it had concluded cooperative agreements on the decommissioning of boiling water reactors (BWRs) in Japan with both Cavendish Nuclear Limited of the United Kingdom and AREVA NC S.A. of France.

Having decommissioned gas-cooled reactors in Britain already, Cavendish Nuclear has extensive experience in planning, the management of waste and the dismantling of reactors. AREVA, meanwhile, has a range of experience in the planning of decommissioning and in the dismantling of light water reactors (LWRs), including BWRs, at nuclear power plants in Europe and the United States.

Several electric power companies in Japan have announced their intention to decommission some of their NPPs. Given that serious consideration of and preparation for decommissioning has begun in Japan, Hitachi GE seeks—through cooperative agreements with the two firms with their proven records—to be in a position to support those companies from the earliest stage.
