At the same meeting, the NRA also approved the applications for permission to change reactor installations that had been filed by Kansai EP.
After considering public comments, as well as opinions from the Japan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the NRA completed the compliance examinations on the same day as the meeting.
The decision to approve the reactors’ restart was the second made by the NRA, after it had done the same for Units 1 and 2 of the Sendai NPS, owned and operated by the Kyushu Electric Power Co. It had taken the NRA a year and a half to conduct the examinations.
In light of the volume of cases before the NRA, some have called for it to further improve the efficiency of the examination process.
