During the conference, JAIF, together with overseas nuclear industry organizations, is working with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to run a pavilion and conduct other activities under the initiative, and will issue a joint statement.
It is the third time that a pavilion dedicated to nuclear energy has been set up at a COP (Conference of the Parties), the first having been at COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2021, where a booth was set up by the grassroots initiative Nuclear for Climate (N4C), which brings together nuclear organizations from over 150 countries around the world. At COP27 in 2022 (Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt), the IAEA set up a nuclear pavilion for the first time, and global nuclear industry organizations, including JAIF, cooperated in its operation. Also, it issued a joint statement on the critical role of nuclear energy in the current geopolitical situation.
At COP28, a pavilion is being set up in the main venue where delegates from around the world will gather for presentations and media interviews. In addition, the Net Zero Nuclear Summit, to be held on December 7 and 8, will bring together high-level officials from the public and private sectors worldwide. The event will include panel discussions, roundtable discussions, and the like.
President Arai emphasized, “The presence of nuclear energy at the COP grows year by year, and the recognition is steadily spreading that it can be an effective means of combating climate change. At COP28, we will make appeals for the significant contribution that nuclear energy can make in combating climate change, and will disseminate a variety of information from the conference site.”
