As for science and technology innovation in nuclear power, it says that various efforts will be made in line with the Strategic Energy Plan. Specifically, it enumerates the following goals:

  • Developing technologies to improve nuclear safety and security.
  • Developing technologies for the treatment and disposal of radioactive waste stemming from spent fuel and reactor decommissioning, among others.
  • Developing technologies for decommissioning nuclear facilities.
  • Strictly and appropriately implementing regulations related to nuclear facilities.

The strategy also includes two future aims, to be met by 2020, that are related to nuclear power:

  • Utilizing nuclear power for those plants confirmed to be in conformance to new regulatory standards, with top priority placed on safety.
  • Using remotely-controlled robots and other equipment that can contribute to the removal of fuel debris from the Fukushima Daiichi NPPs.
