On June 19, the Japanese Cabinet decided upon the Comprehensive Strategy for Science and Technology Innovation 2015, which serves as the guideline for the country's policies related to science and technology. One of the primary objectives of the strategy is to stabilize the supply and reduce the costs of clean energy.

As for science and technology innovation in nuclear power, it says that various efforts will be made in line with the Strategic Energy Plan. Specifically, it enumerates the following goals:

Developing technologies to improve nuclear safety and security.
Developing technologies for the treatment and disposal of radioactive waste stemming from spent fuel and reactor decommissioning, among others.
Developing technologies for decommissioning nuclear facilities.
Strictly and appropriately implementing regulations related to nuclear facilities.

The strategy also includes two future aims, to be met by 2020, that are related to nuclear power:

Utilizing nuclear power for those plants confirmed to be in conformance to new regulatory standards, with top priority placed on safety.
Using remotely-controlled robots and other equipment that can contribute to the removal of fuel debris from the Fukushima Daiichi NPPs.
